Uganda and Tanzania have reaffirmed their joint commitment to the East African Crude Oil Pipeline after senior ministers inspected key export facilities in Tanzania.
Uganda’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Development and Tanzania’s Deputy Minister of Energy visited the Marine Storage and Terminal facility in Tanga Region to assess construction progress and readiness.
The facility forms a central part of the pipeline’s export system. It includes four crude oil storage tanks with a combined capacity of about two million barrels. It also has power generation units and export pumps to move oil to the jetty for shipment abroad.
Officials were told that the onshore terminal and its support systems are complete. These include electrical, telecommunications and security installations, as well as the link to offshore loading operations.
The export jetty connects to the terminal through a two-kilometre trestle. Construction of the mooring and berthing structures is now about 85 per cent complete.
Engineers briefed the ministers on safety standards, construction targets and commissioning schedules.
The Marine Storage and Terminal is due to be commissioned from the first quarter of 2026. This will mark a major step towards full export readiness for the pipeline.
The visit highlighted strong political backing from both countries and close cross-border cooperation. Governments say the project will boost energy development, improve infrastructure and deepen regional economic integration.
