The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has commenced patrols within the capital city, a move officially described as a routine security measure to guarantee public safety ahead of the upcoming general elections.
The deployment was confirmed in a statement issued by the Acting UPDF spokesperson Col Chris Magezi. The statement sought to reassure the public, opening with the line: “No cause for alarm.”
However, Col Magezi clarified that the operation is a direct response to concerning rhetoric from the political arena. “We do not take threats of violence during the election period by some political actors and their supporters lightly,” the statement read.
The UPDF emphasized that its role is supportive, working in tandem with the national police force. “Working alongside the police, our objective is to make sure everyone is safe and assured,” the spokesperson stated. The joint operation aims to protect both “public and private property” and maintain overall security.
The statement concluded with a firm warning, asserting that any “cases of criminality or threats to public order will be dealt with promptly and in compliance with the laws of Uganda.”
